Importance of Protecting your Skin from Sun Exposure

Taking proper care of your skin is so important for your overall health. Especially during the summertime when we are exposed to so many UV rays. Let’s dive into why it’s so important to take care of your skin in the sun.

Sun Exposure:

The sun provides us with many benefits and is great for our health in moderation as long as we are protected. It provides us with vitamin D, can enhance blood circulation and lighten our mood. On the other hand, too much sun exposure can be harmful to our health. An overload of sun exposure can lead to sunburns, early aging, wrinkles, damaged or dead skin cells and even cancer.

Melanin:

Melanin is the natural skin pigment that helps protect our skin from the sun. When you are exposed to quite a bit of sun, the body produces more melanin to fight off the UV rays and keep them from damaging the skin. Although our bodies naturally produce this melanin to fight off the harm that the sun can cause, it isn’t enough for full protection. That is why sunscreen is so important for our skin!

UV Rays:

Skin damage is caused by too much ultraviolet radiation, commonly known as UV rays. Your skin should be protected from UV rays year-round, but especially during the summer months when they are the strongest. The UV index each day shows the amount of skin-damaging radiation reaching the Earth’s surface in your location at certain points of the day. The higher the UV index, the more damaging rays are reaching the surface. There are two main types of UV rays that can affect the skin. These include UVA rays and UVB rays.

UVA: UVA rays have a longer wavelength and are associated with skin aging. Since these rays are longer, they can damage the dermis layer of skin below the epidermis.

UVB: UVB rays have a shorter wavelength and are associated with sunburns that can greatly damage the epidermis.

Sunscreen:

The skin is the body’s largest organ and should be protected at all times. The skin is delicate and should be cared for just like any other organ in your body. Sunscreen helps to form a barrier over the skin that can deflect UV rays and allow fewer damaging rays to pass through the epidermis of the skin.
